Things To Do In Lisbon

Livraria Bertrand

Address: R. Garrett 73 75, 1200-203 Lisboa, Portugal

The oldest operating bookstore in the world, the Bertrand Bookstore was founded in 1932. It’s located on the main street in Chiado and there’s a cafe towards the back. If you purchase a book, they will ask if you’d like a stamp stating that it was bought at the world’s oldest bookstore. Of course, I got a book and got it stamped. I also bought a tote bag.

The Pink Street

Address: R. Nova do Carvalho, 1200-370 Lisboa, Portugal

This famous street is a must-visit. It’s located in the popular Cais do Sodre neighborhood and used to be Lisbon’s red light district. It’s currently home to bars and restaurants and boasts a great nightlife scene.

Tram 28

Address: Rua de Guilherme Braga 19, 1100-341 Lisboa, Portugal

If you’re in Lisbon, you have to take a ride on Tram 28. The yellow tram is a popular tourist attraction but it’s also a method of public transportation. I’d suggest hopping on at Martim Moniz, especially if you want a seat.

Castelo de S. Jorge

Address: R. de Santa Cruz do Castelo, 1100-129 Lisboa, Portugal

Saint George’s Castle is located on a hill in the Alfama neighborhood. The castle was founded in the 10th and 11th centuries and the oldest known fortification dates back to the 2nd century BC.

Feira da Ladra

Address: Campo de Santa Clara, 1100-472 Lisboa, Portugal

This popular flea market in Lisbon occurs on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It opens at 8:00am and I suggest visiting in the morning. There are tons of vendors, with everything ranging from clothes and jewelry to unique antique finds.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

Address: Largo Santa Luzia, 1100-487 Lisboa, Portugal

This free viewpoint offers incredible views of the city and water. It’s a little hidden, but if you follow the exact address you should be able to find it without an issue.

Belém Tower

Address: Av. Brasília, 1400-038 Lisboa, Portugal

The Belém Tower was built in 1514 as a gateway to Lisbon and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It’s free to visit and located about 2.5km from central Lisbon.

Pastéis de Belém

Address: R. de Belém 84 92, 1300-085 Lisboa, Portugal

This shop is known for making the original, authentic pastel de nata pastry. Originally, the monks at Jerónimos Monastery made these tarts but when the monasteries shut down in 1834 following the 1820 liberal revolution across the country, some of the tarts were sold at the general store nearby and they immediately become popular. The monks then passed the recipe along to the shop. The original recipe has never been altered and it’s still a secret today. The pastry shop sells thousands pastéis de nata daily.

Jerónimos Monastery

Address: Praça do Império 1400-206 Lisboa, Portugal

The monastery opened in 1601. It’s listed as a National Monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building design is beautiful, a great example of the late Portuguese Gothic Manueline style of architecture.
